Nerja, on the coast 54 kilometres from Malaga Airport, is a typical whitewashed village in Andalucia, southern Spain. Once a small fishing village perched between the foot of the mountains and the sea the original village has now expanded into a coastal town with a resident population of over 10,000. Nerja has avoided the massive development that has happened in other parts of the Costa del Sol. The famous Balcon de Europa is in the centre of the village. The old part of the village is a maze of small, cobbled streets with numerous bars and restaurants. It is a great place for a holiday, very friendly and with lots to do. There are some great beaches to visit including:-
Playa Burriana, the largest and most famous beach in Nerja. It is a wide beach with a mixture of sand and pebbles. There are lots of restaurants and bars, watersports and activities including scuba diving and day cruises.
Playa Torrecilla is a little quieter at the bottom of the town centre. The sand is soft and the sea shallow so is great for the kids.
Playa Calahonda, the fishermen's beach is to the left of the Balcon at the bottom of a steep winding pathway. Mixture of sand and pebbles.
Playa el Salon, to the right of the Balcon down a cobbled pathway. Lovely secluded beach in the centre of the town, soft sand and small pebbles with sunbeds and umbrellas for hire.
Playazo Beach is about 2km long - you can take your car right onto the beach. There are some great beach restaurants here.
Not to be missed are the Cuevas de Nerja - spectacular limestone caves. Discovered in 1959 they have archaeological remains dating back over 20,000 years. In July the International Festival of Music and Dance is held in the caves.
Sierra Tejeda mountains, Nerja - If you are looking for the chance to get back to nature it is very easy to leave the bustle behind and head out one of the many scenic countryside walks available from Nerja. There are a number of locally escorted treks for all levels of walker and in as little as just 10 minutes you will find yourself among the flora and the fauna of the lower slopes of the Tejeda hills.
The Lake Viñuela area is close by if you want to combine a trip to the countryside with a chance to do a little fishing.
The nearest golf course, Baviera Golf, is a twenty minute drive away.
