Torrox, great for a holiday in Spain

Torrox - 47 kilometres east of Malaga and 2 km inland from the coast and reached prosperous heights during the Moorish period due to its role in the silk trade between Granada and Damascus and Baghdad. Torrox is on the scenic Route of Sun and Wine and has a population of 12,000 - more during the summer months. The Torrox area lays claim to have "the best climate in Europe" sheltered as it is by the Sierra Tejeda and Sierra Almijara mountains. Thus it boasts an average annual temperature of 18C.

Torrox Pueblo still has its white Moorish village structure with very narrow streets and a main square. The old part of the village is very pretty with white-walled houses on the steep slopes of the town. 16th century buildings include the Mudejar style church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, and the Shrine and Convent of the Virgen de las Nieves. Interesting civil works include the 18th century Hospital of San José and the 19th century Sugar Factory.

Torrox Costa is is also the site of the remains of a Roman necropolis and villa located immediately west of the lighthouse.

El Morche
Phoenician remains on the coast testify to the long history of settlement in the area but Torrox also constituted an important factory town during the Roman era, from which extensive ruins have been conserved on the coast beside the lighthouse. These include a necroplis, a restored thermal baths, ovens used in the manufacture of ceramics, houses, the luxury villa Clavicum built in the 1st century and troughs used for the preparation of fish paste (garum).

Beaches
Playa Ferrara

Torrox Costa´s main beach runs for almost two kilometres eastwards along a promenade to the lighthouse. Numerous restaurants, bars and shops open all year, plus sunbeds, showers, toilets and a kids playground. In summer there are also pedaloes and lifeguards.

El Penoncillo
The beach at El Penoncillo runs eastwards from the lighthouse towards Nerja, is wider and stonier than the beach at neighbouring Playa Ferrara. Facilities include a few beach bar/restaurants providing sunbeds, showers and toilets.
